A little care keeps clothes and shoes looking good for longer. Always check the care label first: it takes priority over the general advice below.
Knitwear
- Wash as the label says, inside out, on a cool, gentle cycle or by hand.
- Reshape while damp and dry flat, away from direct heat.
- Fold rather than hang, so the shoulders keep their shape.
Coats and jackets
- Follow the label: many coats need dry cleaning only.
- Hang on a broad, shaped hanger and brush off dust and lint between wears.
- Let a wet coat dry naturally at room temperature.
Dresses, tops and trousers
- Wash at the temperature on the label, with similar colours.
- Iron or steam at the setting the fabric allows.
Leather shoes and boots
- Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and let them dry naturally, away from radiators.
- Use a neutral cream now and then to keep leather supple.
- Store with shoe trees or tissue to hold the shape.
Suede and nubuck
- Brush gently with a suede brush, always in one direction.
- Use a protector spray before the first wear and again from time to time.
Bags
- Wipe with a soft, dry cloth and store stuffed with tissue, in a dust bag if you have one.
